Overview and Attractions

Visitors to the Lake District can do as much or as little as they please, you can serenely go around the many charming Lakeland towns and villages, explore the areas history at its castles and historical houses, there are a variety of attractions and you could enjoy fun for the whole family at one of the numerous events taking place around the year.

The local countryside around Kendal is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, discovering its beauty is best done by walking around and seeing for yourself. Kendal has the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry. There are the historical villages of Bourbon and Kirkby Lonsdale, with both having a number of historic sites to explore.

The Penrith area has the Lakes’ most popular walk, the walk up Helvellyn peak that is a great favourite for visitors who enjoy exploring and for walking enthusiasts. Penrith town has Penrith Castle, dating back to the 14th century and was built as a defence against raids from the Scottish, it is surrounded by parklands. Lake Windermere is one of the best known natural attractions in the Lake District and is the largest of the lakes in the area. A great way to see and enjoy the best of the lake is for visitors to enjoy a boat trips, where visitors can take a closer took at the outstanding natural beauty of both the lake and the surrounding countryside. There are various attractions in the area to suit a range of tastes, these include Buttermere Ayrshire Ice Cream located on Syke Farm in Cumbria where you will find a plethora of ice cream flavours, the tearoom serves homemade cakes and scones. The gift shop sells a variety of local crafts and gifts. Take a break from hiking or exploring and enjoy afternoon tea, cakes and ice cream.

Dalmain Historic House & Gardens are set against the backdrop of the Lakeland Fells and parkland. You can walk the rose walk with nearly 200 old-fashioned roses. Also featured is a wild garden with some wonderful wild flowers, the Tudor Knot Garden and the Abies Cephalonica. If you are there at the start of summer you can see a stunning display of blue Himalayan poppies. There are great views of the surrounding woodland to enjoy in a visit to the house.

La Galerie D'Art offer visitors the chance to visit three art galleries located in Windermere and Ambleside. The galleries have regular exhibitions of original paintings by both local and international artists. Also there are limited editions, unique prints and giftware. A visit here is a great way to become inspired on your trip to the Lake District and appreciate a range of quality artworks.

The Lakes Aquarium is located at Newby Bridge in Cumbria and features the UK's largest collection of freshwater fish. The attraction offers a great place for the whole family to enjoy, there is an underwater tunnel with giant carp and diving ducks. You can learn about river life and various mammals. You can see sharks and otters among others, there are special quiz trail for children sure to keep them occupied and interested. Various events held around the year. There are a number of experts on hand to enhance your experience. There is a range of accommodation available for visitors to the Lake District. One thing to remember is to ensure your hotel is not too far away from where you need to get to, the travelling time each day to and from your hotel can take up a substantial chunk of your time.
