Attractions

Stafford Castle offers visitors the chance to see a heritage site in Central England. The site of the castle has strategic importance and provides a great vantage point, the castle backs back to the 12th century, it was originally built by Robert de Toeni who became known as Robert of Stafford in later years. The castle has maintained its dominant position in the local skyline over the centuries.

The castle represents a fine example of the motte and bailey system, in the 14th century the battlements were constructed. It was from the mid 15th century that the castle enjoyed its heyday, however it was not to last and by the 17th century the castle had deteriorated in its condition.

The castle was then demolished and rebuilt in a Gothic Style in 1813. However in keeping with the pattern of being demolished/left abandoned and rebuilt, the castle was again allowed to become abandoned.

In recent years there has been much work done to restore the castle to former glories and it is now considered among the finest examples of Norman earthworks in the UK. Visitors to the castle today can see over 900 years of history in the building that has plenty of character and heritage.

The Herb Garden at the castle have a long history and during its heyday a range of herbs were grown here each designed to cure a specific illness, today visitors can still see the herb garden and enjoy a leisurely stroll across the historic garden. The site is approx 26 acres in size and contains the Keep, inner and outer bailey, herb garden, woodland, visitor centre and the car park.

The Visitor Centre at the castle aims to bring the castle to life for visitors. Within the centre there are fascinating artefacts from the archaeological excavations on display. There are guides on hand that can help to explain in more detail any questions visitors may have. There is an audio visual area where visitors can see a film that explains the history behind the castle. There is a scale model showing what the motte and bailey castle would have looked like back in 1100.

During the year the Castle plays host to a wide ranging and diverse programme of events that include family days out to a range of historical themed events. The castle has hosted performances of Shakespeare's plays for a number of years too.

Tips & Other Considerations

There may be some variations on the opening hours depending on the time of year and other factors. It is recommended visitors double check before going to ensure the attraction you wish to see is open and avoid disappointment.

When travelling always remain alert, vigilant and aware of your belongings at all times. Ensure valuables such as your wallet/purse are hidden away from public view. If you have a bag try to use a shoulder bag with a good quality, strong strap, that is put across your shoulder not on your shoulder making it more difficult for anyone to take your bag.

If you are travelling by car to the Castle ensure you are well prepared with maps and Sat Nav to aid your journey, particularly if you are not familiar with the local area and roads. Use the journey planner to get door to door directions & plan your tip. Check traffic updates before travelling.

If you are travelling by public transport, check for service updates prior to beginning your journey for any delays, disruption or cancellations to services that may impact on your journey. Ensure you have the service timetables for the trains, buses and coaches. Remember when the last services are and ensure you make it to the train/bus/coach stops well in time.
