Scotland includes over 8,000 miles in coastline; visitors can find a number of scenic beaches and stretches of coastline away from the crowds. There are a number of beaches visitors can explore close by to towns such as St Andrews, Nairn, Dornoch and the city of Aberdeen. The north and west coasts of Scotland are known for their rugged nature characterised with scenic cliff settings and smaller coves whilst the Hebrides are famous for the white beaches.

Over the years certain beaches have become synonymous with leisure activities includes St Andrews known for kite surfing and Tiree known for wind surfing. Scotland's beaches offer a range of coastal scenery and a number have seaside awards offering a great place to enjoy a break.

The east coast of Scotland includes Lunan Bay beach on the scenic Angus coastline, noted for its natural beauty in a scenic setting. The west coast of Scotland includes Sandwood Bay beach in Sutherland famous for its mile long sandy beach, the remote location makes it an ideal place to get away from the crowds.

The Scottish Islands include Luskentyre beach located in the Outer Hebrides, the area offers visitors wit some wonderful scenic views, the beach has large sand dunes to the north and the North Harris mountains are visible in the background.

The two largest settlements in Scotland, Glasgow the largest city and Edinburgh the capital city are relatively close by to a number of local beaches. From Edinburgh, Portobello beach is located a few miles from the city making it popular with families. The Largs beach in North Ayrshire is located 30 miles to the west of Glasgow, the sandy beach is popular with visitors with boat trips available to the Isle of Cumbrae.
