Business Customs and Etiquette

Business meetings should be arranged in advance, business dress is conservative, the usual greeting is with a handshake. When addressing people it is customary to use titles rather than first names. German is understood along with English as a business language, translators are available if required. Trust and understanding are sought after qualities with people to do business with and some general conversation prior to getting down to business talk is an accepted custom.

Doing business over a long lunch is a usual business practice and presents to the hosts are appreciated. New media industries may have a more relaxed dress code than those of more established industries.


Travel Advice and Tips

Most trips to Slovakia each year for business travellers and tourists go ahead without incident, but the following points are worth remembering. There are incidents of pick pocketing and bag snatching, ensure valuables are not in public view. There have also been incidents of spiked drinks with the victims having valuables stolen, it is wise not to leave your drinks unattended at any time. You should always remain alert and fully aware of your surroundings and environment.

Slovakia Weather & Climate

Slovakia is located in central Europe and as a result is subject to a continental/temperate climate, with four distinct seasons, winter, spring, summer and autumn. The climate results in warm summers with cold and cloudy winters. The north of the country including the mountains are usually cooler than the south. The climate means it is a destination that can be visited for most of the year.

Lightweight cotton and linen clothing can be warn in the summer months; Mountain/Alpine wear clothing is required in the mountain regions throughout the year. Additional layers and warmer clothing is required during the autumn and winter months. Rainwear with rain coats and waterproofs are advisable throughout the year.
