There are over 50 cities located across England, the largest is London with a population of over 8 million. Historically cities have been granted by the British monarch and were awarded to towns that had a diocesan cathedral. Currently there are no specific requirements for city status to be awarded, the last batch of cities were awarded during Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee in 2002 and Diamond Jubilee in 2012, that have been referred to as Millennium and Jubilee cities.

In Northern England, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Carlisle are located in the north east of England, they are the two most northerly cities in England. Newcastle is well known for its lively nightlife and entertainment making it a popular weekend and short breaks destination. Durham located in County Durham is home to both Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral that are includes in the World Heritage Site in the city.

In the Midlands, Birmingham is located close to the centre of England, it is the second largest city in England after London offering a choice of attractions for visitors. The city of Derby in Derbyshire is known for its historic attractions and is located close by the Peak District National Park. The city of Lincoln is a relatively compact city famous for its historic cathedral. Stoke-on-Trent is referred to sometimes as The Potteries in reference to its history with the pottery industry.

In Southern England, London is the best known city in England and the UK, a leading global city and one of the world’s most visited cities London attracts visitors from across the UK and all over the world. The city offers a wide choice of attractions, places of interest, dining options, accommodation and entertainment that few other cities can match. The city of Canterbury in Kent is a historic cathedral city located in south east England, the city is home to a number of universities and parts of the city including Canterbury Cathedral are part of the World Heritage Site in the city. Brighton is a city located on the south coast of England, famous as a seaside resort over the years the city has grown and is now a growing centre for business along with still being a popular seaside resort and short break destination.
