The city of Birmingham includes a range of entertainment options for visitors; the city offers theatres, film and cinemas, a range of live comedy venues and dance productions from traditional to opera, ballet and contemporary.

Theatre


The Birmingham Hippodrome is located on Hurst Street in central Birmingham. The hippodrome is the best known theatre in Birmingham and is home to a number of theatrical productions throughout the year catering for a range of tastes. Shows staged here include ballet, dance, musicals, opera and comedy. The theatre has a capacity of 2,000 and hosts a choice of London musicals and acclaimed opera and ballet productions.

The Crescent Theatre, located in Sheepcote Street just off Broad Street in central Birmingham. The theatre is one of Birmingham's oldest theatre companies with a good reputation for providing quality entertainment at reasonable prices. The theatre offers a great experience to all its visitors. In addition to the auditorium, the Crescent theatre has the Theatre Bar and the Coffee Bar that overlook the canal. Both of these offer a wide selection of refreshments in a wonderful relaxed environment.


Cinema


Birmingham includes a number of cinemas located in the city including cinemas from larger cinemas chains such as Vue, Odeon and Cineworld to smaller and independent cinemas showing a range of British, Hollywood and International films. The Vue cinema at Star City includes 30 screens making it one of the largest cinema complexes in the UK.

The Electric Cinema is centrally located in Birmingham, it is the oldest working cinema in the UK. The cinema opened back in 1909 and today it offers visitors a range of independent and commercial films.

mac Birmingham (formally Midland Arts Centre), is located in Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The arts centre is home to plays, theatre, concerts, art exhibitions, music classes and includes a cinema. At the cinema visitors will find a range of art house films for film aficionados.

The Flatpack Festival is Birmingham’s cinema festival that takes place each year. The festival showcases film culture and includes an eclectic mix of work making it one of the most exciting and innovative film festivals in the UK. The works and shows are presented at venues across Birmingham.


Concerts


Symphony Hall is one of the best places to see live music in Birmingham. Located on Broad Street in the heart of Birmingham, there are a range of concerts available covering a wide range of music genres from classical to jazz and blues to rock and pop. The hall is considered one of the UK’s finest concert halls with an impressive auditorium and high quality acoustics.

O2 Academy Birmingham is located on Bristol Street in central Birmingham. The venue is a popular music venue and has a capacity of over 3,000 in the main auditorium, here visitors can see a range of artists and bands including established well known names and up and coming bands. The venue is host to a range of gigs that cover a range of music genres.


Other Events


There are plenty of events going on in Birmingham, it is best to check before you visit to see if the timings fit in with your schedules.

Birmingham is home to two football teams, Birmingham City and Aston Villa both teams are based in Birmingham and there is an intense rivalry amongst supporters of both teams. Visitors can take in a match whilst visiting the city and experience the great atmosphere on match days.

The Birmingham International Jazz Festival, has been established for a number of years. The festival usually takes place over ten days in June with over 150 performers in a number of venues located across Birmingham. There are live shows, performances, workshops and jam sessions with the majority of events free to the public.
