Introduction and Overview

The Leeds Travel Guide provides an overview of local tourist attractions and places of interest for visitors along with useful tourist information. The city of Leeds is located in West Yorkshire in the North of England, it is the largest city in Yorkshire.

Historically Leeds had large textile-manufacturing industries and one of many northern cities to have its local economy linked to manufacturing.

The gradual closing down of these industries brought some tough times for the city and its people, after the closing of heavier industries there has been a change in the local economy and Leeds has emerged as the second financial centre after London.

Leeds has a lively buzz about it fuelled by the large student population, the nightlife is highly regarded offering a range of options for visitors, it city has a thriving bar, restaurant and club scene.

The city centre in Leeds includes a number of pedestrianised streets with a choice of larger and smaller shops and restaurants, the city centre includes a number of historic Victorian and Georgian buildings and arcades that offer a great historic perspective on the city.

The city is well known for its range of shopping facilities, it has been dubbed the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’ and includes a range of high street, boutique and up market shopping facilities.

The rural countryside is within short reach of the city and perfect for relaxing and unwinding, along the scenic country lanes. The city of Leeds is located between the Yorkshire Dales National Park, North York Moors National Park and the Peak District National Park giving visitors a great location from which to explore the parks.

Leeds includes a number of districts, in central Leeds there is the central shopping district where visitors can find the famous shopping facilities the city has become well known for in the past two decades, with a range of shops, shopping centres outlets and boutiques catering for a wide range of tastes and budgets.

The Civic Quarter located around Millennium Square is where visitors with find a range of galleries, museums and the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University.

The Financial District is centred around Park Square in the city centre, it is many of the finance firms as based in the city.

Exchange Quarter is located to the east of the city centre, the centrepiece of the area is the famous Leeds Corn Exchange and the area now includes a number of independent restaurants, bars and cafes.

The Holbeck district is located to the south of the city centre, the area was once home to manufacturing industries in Leeds. The area has been transformed and renovated into an area for creative industries and includes a number of trendy cafes and bars.

Headingley is a suburb to the North West of Leeds, the area is well known for its famous cricket and rugby stadium and is a firm favourite for students with a choice of trendy bars, shops and restaurants.

Headingley is known for its leafy tree lined streets and includes some Victorian terraces.

Roundhay is located a few miles north of Leeds city centre, the affluent area that includes a number of Victorian terraces and villas. The area includes Roundhay Park, one of the most popular attractions in the area, it includes a number of scenic gardens, lakes, castle and mansion house.

Leeds is situated close to the geographical centre of the UK making it ideally located for UK visitors from both north and south. Leeds also benefits from good transport links by road, rail and air with the fast growing Leeds Bradford International Airport.

Given this great location and the range of activities and things to do, it makes perfect sense to enjoy a visit to Leeds and enjoy the rural beauty of the countryside close by whilst still experiencing the buzz and atmosphere of one of Britain's thriving cities.
