Newcastle Entertainment

The city of Newcastle includes a range of entertainment options for visitors; the city offers theatres, film and cinemas, a range of live comedy venues and dance productions from traditional to opera, ballet and contemporary. There are also a number of local festivals that take place throughout the year.

Theatre


The Theatre Royal is located on Grey Street in Newcastle city centre in a historic Grade I listed building. The theatre is one of the best known and respected theatres in the UK. It has a long and rich history in presenting the best in drama, music, dance and comedy. Opened back in 1837, there are nearly 400 performances here each year and is recognised as an important historic and cultural landmark. The theatre presents a wide range of performances ranging from ballet and opera to drama, entertainment and children’s shows. Facilities include onsite café and restaurant with licensed bars.

The Northern Stage Theatre (previously the Newcastle Playhouse) is located on Barras Bridge in the North End of Newcastle city centre. The theatre has built up a fine reputation over the years as one of the UK’s leading theatre companies. Visitors can enjoy a varied programme of shows including contemporary dance, classical drama, modern classical productions and comedy. Along with producing their own productions the Northern Stage present the best in local, UK wide and international theatre. Facilities include an on site café and restaurant.


Cinema


Newcastle includes a number of cinemas located in the city including cinemas from larger cinemas chains such as Vue, Odeon and Cineworld to smaller and independent cinemas showing a range of British, Hollywood and International films. The Vue cinema at Star City includes 30 screens making it one of the largest cinema complexes in the UK.

The Tyneside Cinema is centrally located in Newcastle, inside a Grade II listed building noted for its Art Deco design. Facilities include four cinema screens, coffee rooms and two bars, the cinema includes historic and modern artworks to create a real sense of occasion where visitors can enjoy a range of British and International films including the latest Hollywood blockbusters and independent films.

The Gate is an entertainment and leisure complex located on Newgate Street in Newcastle. The complex includes a range of restaurants, bars, pubs, and clubs and includes a 16 screen Empire cinema. The cinema shows the best in British, Hollywood and International films with a choice of commercial and independent films.

The Star & Shadow Cinema is located in Battlefield to the east of the city centre in Newcastle. The cinema offers something a bit different, it is entirely run by volunteers, the venue hosting films, gigs and live art exhibitions. The cinema shows art house films are shown on Thursday and Saturday evenings.


Concerts


The O2 Academy Newcastle is a relative newcomer to the scene, opened in 2005 the 2,000 capacity auditorium that has been carefully restored and creates great atmosphere. Within a relatively short space of time the venue has become established as a major venue on the UK touring circuit. The venue hosts a range of music shows, gigs and club nights covering a range of music genres. Also at the venue is the O2 Academy 2, a 400 capacity venue used for showcasing new and up and coming talent.

Comedy


The Hyena is a comedy and part venue located on Leazes Lanes in the heart of Newcastle city centre. The venue attracts a top line-up of stand-up comics, offering visitors with comedy entertainment and dinner. Its large capacity and a late licence mean it is a popular venue for comedy fans and party goers alike. Being a popular venue it is wise to book in advance.


Other Events


There are plenty of events going on in Newcastle, it is best to check before you visit to see if the timings fit in with your schedules.

Newcastle is home to Newcastle United football club, with local rivals Sunderland FC located close by, football is very much a local passion and there is an intense rivalry amongst supporters of both teams. Visitors can take in a match whilst visiting the city and experience the great atmosphere on match days.

The Eat! NewcastleGateshead festival is an innovative and imaginative food and drink festival that takes place in July. The festival lasts for ten days in July and showcases local food producers, restaurants and local culinary talent. Visitors can sample a range of food and drink, see cooking demonstrations, see food markets and enter competitions offering a fun day out for the whole family.
