The city of Newcastle upon Tyne (usually referred to as Newcastle) is located in Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. The city grew becoming an important centre for the wool trade and for coal mining and became known for ship building and ship repairing. Over the years the heavy industry closed leaving difficult times ahead for the city and its population. The city has enjoyed a renaissance of fortunes with a range of urban regeneration projects undertaken, the city has bounced back to become a favoured destination for visitors particularly for short and weekend breaks. There are a choice of historic, cultural and contemporary attractions and places of interest for visitors to explore.

The city boasts a thriving arts and culture scene with plenty do see and do for visitors both to Newcastle and the neighbouring town of Gateshead. Newcastle is a university city with both Newcastle University and Northumbria University based here and the administrative and cultural centre for the Tyne and Wear area with locals known as Geordies.
