The Tudor mansion was built over the course of some 32 years in the 16th century. In the 17th century there were changes made such as inserting arched windows, it is possible the house suffered during the Civil War.

In 1754 the 9th Earl inherited the mansion and quickly secured the services of Capability Brown to plan and oversee the modernisation of the garden, elements of the house and the surrounding parkland.
