Burghley House is a historic Tudor mansion located on the Burgley Estate in Lincolnshire. There are a range of attractions for visitors to see here, the most famous is the house that contains a number of wonderful collections, there are also fine gardens on site and a deer park. There is plenty here for the whole family to enjoy a pleasant day out in the scenic English countryside.
Attractions
Burghley House has great historical and architectural importance, reflected in the Grade I listed building status it has. The Tudor mansion was built over the course of some 32 years in the 16th century. In the 17th century there were changes made such as inserting arched windows, it is possible the house suffered during the Civil War.
In 1754 the 9th Earl inherited the mansion and quickly secured the services of Capability Brown to plan and oversee the modernisation of the garden, elements of the house and the surrounding parkland. The work of Capability Brown can be seen today, he brought a number of changes to the mansion such as adding extensive stables, an Orangery and a Gothic styled garden summer house. He also removed the north-west wing to allow for wonderful views of the then newly planted parkland.
The State Rooms at Burghley are the grandest and most ornate of the rooms in the house. The rooms were subject to change during the 17th and 18th centuries as under the ownership of the Earls that then resided here the rooms were filled with a range of wonderful collections and treasures. The Earls were great collectors and so began the tradition of the great collections that visitors can view in the house today. The interior of the rooms was also altered under the 9th Earl who along with Capability Brown and a host of top craftsmen of the day began their transformation of the house.
The George Rooms are visually stunning rooms were last used as a suite by Queen Victoria in the mid 19th century. The George Rooms are regarded as the most spectacular and stunning of all the state apartments and have a range of Italian masterpieces that adorn the walls along with an Italian furniture and art works bought from the Grand Tour in Italy. The fireplace too is from Rome, rooms provide a stunning spectacle and are a highlight of any visit here.
The Blue Silk Bedroom is famous for the state bed made by Mayhew & Ince in the 18th century that fills the relatively small room. There is a dressing room here too and a range of fine furnishing, fittings and decorations in the interior of the room that mark it out as special. There are some stunning views of the lake from the room.
Burgley is well known for the range of world renowned collections it houses. Collections include a range of wonderful Italian masterpieces, art works, textiles, both European and Oriental ceramics and others. The paintings collection is renowned for the Italian paintings along with masterpieces from the 16th to the 19th century for visitors to see.
The furniture collection includes a range of fine furniture from the 17th to the 19th century with furniture made from great craftsmen. The Silver Collection is an extensive one with fine examples of wonderful pieces dating from the 17th century up to the 19th century.
The Ceramics Collection is among the best collections of its type anywhere, there are great pieces including from Japan and China among others including a number of rare pieces.
The Gardens here offer plenty for the whole family, there are a number of relaxing walks on offer along with modern sculpture to see. The parkland and the gardens are designed by Capability Brown back in the 18th century, the design here means the area is a great place for weddings, events, private functions and classical concerts. The park is open all year round for visitors.
Gardens of Surprise and the Sculpture Garden are the main visitors gardens. There is plenty for visitors to see in each of the gardens and offer a scenic place to go for a stroll, visitors can see a number of flowers and plants with plenty of colour along the way.
The Orangery Court is among a number of Courtyards at the house. The rosebeds were first planted here back in the 1960s and can still be seen today. The pond at the centre contains a number of large carp and Golden orfe and several large carp.
How to Get There
The House can be accessed by both car and public transport:
By Car:
Burgley is located approx 92 miles from central London. The approx journey time is 2 hour and 10 minutes from London. From London take the A41 then the A1 and then the A1(M) and back on the A1 all the way to the exit for the B1081/Old Great N Road. Drive along the B1081 until the second right turning and drive along the road until you see the entrance on the right.
There are parking facilities on site.

By Train:
From London Liverpool Street Station in central London there are regular trains available to Stanstead Airport, from here there are trains available to Stamford Station located approx 1 mile from Burgley. The journey time is approx 1 hour 45 minutes from Stanstead to Stamford and 40 minutes for the journey from London Liverpool Street to Stanstead. Visitors can take a taxi from Stamford station or alternatively walk the 1 mile to Burgley.
Bus
There are regular buses from Peterborough to Stamford that visitors can use to access the site the bus numbers are 401 and 402.
Coach
National Express offers regular coaches from London Victoria station to Peterborough Bus Station. From Peterborough there are local bus services to Stamford, the route numbers Local Link 401 and 402.
