Attractions

Cherkley Court & Gardens is set within 400 acres of park and woodlands within the scenic Surrey countryside and provides a great setting for the imposing house & gardens. The house was the home of the 1st Lord Beaverbrook from 1910 until 1964, in recent years the house has undergone extensive restoration and renovation that has helped to restore the house to former glories.

Cherkley Court was bought by William Maxwell Aitken, the 1st Lord Beaverbrook back in 1910, the house had been rebuilt after the fire here in 1893. Lord Beaverbrook was a newspaper owner and used the house to entertain a number of well known people that included Rudyard Kipling, Harold Macmillan and Sir Winston Churchill among others.

During the Second World War the house became a base for Lord Beaverbrook in his role as Minister for Aircraft Production and was a member of the War Cabinet. After Lady Beaverbrook's death in 1994 the Beaverbrook foundation began an ambitious programme of renovation and restoration for the house.

The House has been subject to extensive refurbishment programme overseen by designer, David Mlinaric. The house was refurbished adhering to the principles of ensuring the character of the Victorian country house and the personal possessions and tastes of the 1st Lord Beaverbrook were left in tact. This has helped to ensure the character and history of the house is still very much in evidence for visitors to see.

The Gardens at Cherkley Court provide visitors with an impressive spectacle and are a highlight of any visit here. The gardens are spread over 16 acres offering visitors with a range of features alongside some splendid views of the Mole Valley and the Yew Woods.
