The city of Brighton and Hove is located in East Sussex on the south coast in England and has long been synonymous with the various beaches located here. Brighton's beaches are among the best known and most popular seaside areas in England. The pebble beaches are amongst the best known on the south coast along with the famous seafront, marina and Brighton Pier. The beach has an excellent rating by the Marine Conservation Society making it an ideal place to go for the whole family.

Brighton is home to a number of beaches which along with its pier, marina and seafront offer a number of attractions, amusements and plenty for the whole family to enjoy. The beaches are very popular with families and sun bathers and those taking part in water sports and outdoor activities.

Brighton's beaches are located on England's famous south coast, the location makes them a popular destination for those living in London and the surrounding areas when looking to enjoy a seaside break or day out. Brighton is home to a number of beaches these include Brighton Central (Palace Pier) beach, Brighton Kemp Town beach and Hove beach.

Brighton Central (Palace Pier) beach is centrally located and probably the best known of the beaches here. The beach itself has a log stretch of shingle and sand shore attracting sun worshippers, families and water sports enthusiasts. The beach is well known for the historic Brighton Pier where visitors can find a number of attractions and traditional seaside amusements. The pier dates back to the 19th century and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Brighton. The pier is a Grade II listed building and includes a number of thrill rides, traditional rides including dodgems, kids rides, traditional seaside stalls, amusement arcades, bars and a number of eateries.

Brighton Kemp Town beach is located a short distance to the east of Brighton Central beach. The beach is located in the Kemp Town area of Brighton close by to Brighton Marina, offering an alternative to explore. The Kemp Town area includes a number of historic buildings dating back to the Regency and Victorian era. The area includes a choice of bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants serving both British and international cuisine; there are a choice of hotels in the area too.

Brighton Seafront includes a mix of traditional seaside shops and a number of artists studios, there is a wide variety of sea front restaurants for visitors to try serving a choice of cuisines. The Fishing Quarter is home to a museum, art trail and Artists' Quarter. Other local attractions include music and open air cinema on the beach and a number of concerts and shows held at the Brighton Centre. The club scene in Brighton is well known and established; there are a choice of clubs on the seafront and in the city attracting clubbers from far and wide.

Brighton Marina is located a short walk to the east of Brighton Central beach; here visitors with find a number of yacht, boats and opportunities for sailing trips. Local entertainment includes cinema, casino, bowling and a choice of cafes, quayside bars and restaurants; there is also outlet shopping at the venue.

Hove beach is located a short walk to the west of Brighton Central beach. Hove beach enjoys a calmer and quieter feel than Brighton Central beach with a decidedly more laid back atmosphere making it an ideal place for visitors keen to get away from the crowds. The beach has shingle and is known for its beach huts of varying colours.

The promenade at Hove is wider than the one in Brighton making it an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing beach stroll. Local attractions include Hove Lagoon Watersports Centre where visitors can learn water sports including sailing, yachting, power boating, wind surfing and more with courses available for children too. There is a playground, sand pit and paddling pool at Hove beach. The promenade is home to a choice of interesting bars, cafes and restaurants providing a wide choice of foods and drinks.

Located in the scenic southern English coast; Brighton beaches is easily assessable from across southern Wales, the Midlands and southern England. From London and much of southern England it is 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes drive by car. From Newcastle, Durham and much of north east England the area is 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours by car, from Leeds it is 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours by car, from Birmingham and much of the Midlands it is 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes. From Liverpool and Manchester it is approx 5 hours to 6 hours.

From Cambridge and much of the East of England it is 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours by car. From Cardiff and areas within South Wales it is 3 hours to 4 hours by car.

Information points can be found on Brighton Pier, Royal Pavilion Shop, Jubilee Library, Brighton Train Travel Centre, Brighton Toy and Model Museum and Brighton Centre Box Office. The seaside town of Worthing is located 11 miles to the west of Brighton in the county of West Sussex. Worthing is a popular destination for beach goers after a day trip or short break, the seaside town has a long history evolving from a compact fishing hamlet to a Georgian seaside resort in the 18th century. During the 19th and 20th centuries the town became synonymous with being one of the UK's leading market gardening centres.

Local attractions include the shingle and sand beaches, seafront and pier offering all the fun and excitement of the seaside along with a choice of attractions and amusements. There are a choice of eateries, bars, cafes and restaurants serving traditional seaside foods and drinks and a choice of other cuisines. The town includes a choice of accommodation options suitable for a range of budgets.

Other local attractions include St Paul's and St Andrew's Churches; Worthing Museum and Art Gallery noted for having one of the largest textile and costume collections in the UK, the museum is housed inside a historic Grade II listed building. The area is home to impressive gardens including those at Beach House Park and Highdown Gardens.

Worthing Festival is an annual arts and music festival; visitors can see programme that include dance, singing, speech, opera and instrumental performances.

The town of Lewes is located 9 miles to the north east of Brighton in East Sussex. Historically a market town, Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and is also within the South Downs National Park. Natural sites include the Lewes Downs, a site of biological interest and Lewes Brooks and Southerham Works Pit that are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Local attractions include Lewes Castle dating back to the 11th century, Lewes Priory, Anne of Cleves House dating back to the 15th century, the house includes a number of collections of furniture and a range of artefacts.

Lewes Farmers' Market is held on the first and third Saturdays of each month. The market includes covered market stalls of local producers selling a range of fine local produce including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, preserves and hot food; there are around 40 local producers at the market.

The town centre in Lewes is noted for its historic architecture with a number of preserved historic buildings evident, the town includes a choice of shops including a number of independent and specialist retailers with a choice of cafes, bars and restaurants.

The seaside town of Eastbourne is located 22 miles to the east of Brighton in East Sussex. The famous Eastbourne seafront include a shingle and sand beach along with seafront restaurants, beach huts and amusements. Eastbourne Pier is one of the best known Victorian piers. The Eastbourne Bandstand hosts in excess of 100 concerts each year, including traditional, proms, fireworks and kids concerts. Other local attractions include the Redoubt Fortress, Eastbourne Lifeboat Museum & Shop and Treasure Island Outdoor Theme Park.

Beachy Head cliffs are the highest chalk sea cliff in the UK, located at the western end of the seafront in Eastbourne, visitors can explore the Beachy Head Countryside Centre, the Lighthouse and Beachy Head Pub. Visitors can enjoy a boat trip to the Beachy Head Light House. The area is a favourite destination for television and films drawn to the scenic natural beauty of the area.

How to Get There


Brighton beaches is accessible by both car and public transport.

By Car:

Brighton's beaches are located approx 55 miles from central London via the A23 and M23. The approx journey time is 1 hours to 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes depending on traffic, route and time of day.

By Train:

From London St Pancreas station and London Victoria station there are regular services to Brighton train station. The journey time is approx 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on service, connections and time of day.

By Bus/Coach:

There are regular coaches available from London Victoria Coach station to Brighton Coach Station. The approx journey time is 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes depending on connections, time of day and traffic. Coach services to Brighton Coach Station are provided by National Express

The weather and climate can be unpredictable across the UK, there can be elements of all four seasons in one day. Ensure you check the weather forecast before you travel and have the correct clothing and footwear including appropriate footwear, raincoat and umbrella.
