Blackpool Attractions

Blackpool offers visitors a choice of local attractions both in Blackpool and in the surrounding areas. The town includes a choice of attractions including museums, galleries, beaches, parks, theatre, concerts and events. Blackpool’s location means the countryside and national parks including the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District are located within a couple of hours drive away; offering visitors with plenty to things to see and do.

We have outlined a number of interesting attractions and places to visit for visitors to Blackpool, these include:

One of the most famous sites in the seaside resort is the Blackpool Tower, located in the heart of Blackpool, it is a smaller scale replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it boasts an aquarium, a circus, an indoor adventure playground and an observation deck that is situated over 500 feet high. At the top of the Tower you can observe some of the best views in Blackpool. For the brave there is the Walk of Faith, which is a strengthened glass floor that is nearly 400ft high at the top of the Tower, this gives you the best view of all, straight down. The Tower has stood over Blackpool for 100 years and has entertained many generations of holiday makers. There are many floors of fun filled things to see and do at the tower.

The Pleasure Beach is viewed by many as the best attraction in Blackpool, it has a huge number of rides including the Pepsi Max Big One that is among the fastest and tallest roller coasters in Europe and attains speeds of up to 87mph. There is also the Dancing Water show with shooting water over 100 feet high, in the winter there is an ice skating arena. With a range of restaurants and eateries the pleasure beach is very popular with families.

Those that like a more sedate pace can enjoy a leisurely walk through Stanley Park, Blackpool's award-winning horticultural and wildlife area. The park covers in excess of 250 acres, here visitors can see the squirrels, view the Italian Gardens the main showpiece of the park and hire a boat on the boating lake and enjoy a great relaxing boating experience. Golfing enthusiasts can enjoy the course at the park too, walkers can enjoy walks at the nature reserve Marton Mere that is situated within close proximity. The park also has a model village and gardens, this miniature marvel has great detail and includes the trams of Blackpool.

Along the Promenade, in the famous Golden Mile is the Sea Life Centre, that has many interesting marine displays including a rare display of sea snakes. The centre includes the largest collection of tropical sharks in Europe and includes the ocean tank that houses a number of tropical sharks and reef fish. Visitors can walk through the spectacular underground tunnel, learn more about marine life with a number of talks and feeding demonstrations. A visit here offers a fun, educational day out for the whole family.

Located close by is one of the oldest and best loved of Blackpool's attractions, Madame Tussauds Blackpool (formally Louis Tussauds Waxworks), where you can meet the famous and well known at their galleries. There are stars of cinema, TV and theatre, a football hall of fame with famous names. For something a bit darker, you can visit the chamber of horrors where there are plenty of villains and more sinister characters around.

Sandcastle Waterpark is located in on South Beach in Blackpool, it is one of Blackpool’s leading attractions and features one of the longest indoor roller coasters in the world. The waterpark contains white knuckle water chutes, slides and the giant Typhoon Lagoon wave pool to provide a day out of fun filled entertainment for the whole family and you do not have to worry about the weather in the tropical climate inside. The fun and games here include the Whirlwind, Great White Whipper and the Hydrostorm which every few minutes tips 100s of gallons of water onto bathers. There are also water cannons and water blasters providing a great water aquatic experience for all.

The Great Promenade Show is an outdoor exhibition that takes place in Blackpool and stretches for two kilometres along New South Promenade. The show features 10 features from artists and designers, both well known and emerging talents. The Grundy Art gallery has exhibitions from traditional to contemporary art and the works on show are ever changing.

Blackpool Zoo is located close to Stanley Park in Blackpool. The zoo is where visitors will find many species of unusual and exotic animals, it is a favourite for wildlife and nature fans set in beautiful parklands. Amazonia is an enclosure that allows visitors to see first hand some of the zoo’s inhabitants. You will see wildlife from the Amazon including birds and monkeys whose home is the Amazon rainforests. The feeding sessions are popular particularly among children. A miniature train takes you across the parkland and through the woods and past some of the animal enclosures.

The Dinosaur Safari takes you on a tour back in time, to a time when dinosaurs were on the earth, learn more about the creatures and how they disappeared from the earth and the emergence of man. The Dino Lightshow is worth seeing on Friday and Saturday evenings during the Blackpool Illuminations. The whole place becomes illuminated making for a great spectacle.

It is recommended that prior to coming to Blackpool; visitors do their research and ensure any sights and attractions they plan on visiting are actually open on the days you intend on coming. The transport is also worth checking as maintenance and engineering works can mean a restricted service on public transport.
