Travelling Around Theatreland

The location of many of the theatres in the Theatreland area lie in the heart of central London, therefore it is usually recommended visitors use public transport as the preferred method to travel around the area. There are a range of options visitors can consider:

Tube (Underground): The tube has stations close to the majority of theatres in Theatreland offering a quick way to get to the theatre and back again. One thing to bear in mind is the timing of the last tube, this can be from a little before midnight to a little after midnight, it is best to check the finishing times of the show to check you can comfortably make it in time. For matinee and early evening shows in particular the tube provides a good transport option.

Trains: Provide transport links to stations such as Charing Cross, London Bridge, Waterloo & Victoria etc. Trains run until around 1am although this can vary depending on the route, it is best to check the finishing time for the shows to ensure you will have enough time to get to the station on time. The stations are close to the theatres but not as close in general as tube stations, it is wise to check the map and see how far they are if you are considering this option. If they are too far to walk you can combine with tube, bus or taxi to get to & from the theatres.

Buses: London buses provide a way to get to many theatres, there are also night buses running in to the night making it possible to get the night bus after your show has finished. The bus network in London is extensive and will take you most areas in London.

Taxis: Using a licensed taxi or minicab can provide a transport solution for those that do not wish to use public transport for any reason. Whilst it is likely to be more expensive than using public transport, you are likely to have a door to door journey and not worry about finding the destination yourself.

Car: With the London congestion charge in operation, those wishing to use their cars during weekdays to see shows will be liable for the congestion charge (if you travel during the operation hours) this will add an extra £8 to your cost. Weekend shows will mean you avoid the congestion charge payment however weekend shows may attract a higher ticket price & can get sold out faster.

There is a range of parking restrictions in the city and care should be exercised to avoid parking in restricted places. On street parking is available although expensive near Theatreland. After the restricted hours (i.e. after 18.30) on street parking can be free & there are less restrictions on Sundays, however it is always advisable to check first before you park anywhere in London.

Theatreland Parking Scheme: Is a scheme where you can get 50% Off Parking Costs, when you see a show. In order to obtain the discount you need to park in a participating car park and take the paper ticket when you enter. This paper ticket should then be given to the kiosk staff at the theatre to validate the ticket. When you return to the car park insert the validated ticket in to the payment machine and you should get the 50% discount. This scheme operates in Westminster City Council West End Theatreland car parks. The car parks are in locations such as Leicester Square, Marble Arch, and Chinatown etc. For further details please see: Discounted Theatreland Parking Scheme
