The UK south coast offers a lot more to visitors than meets the eye, there is plenty to see and do and it caters for a wide range of tastes. This area of the UK is packed with visitor attractions and is popular with old and young alike. The area boasts world famous tourist attractions such as Stonehenge in Wiltshire that attract visitors from all over the world.
A timeless monument, it was built in three stages and has been around for over 3,000 years. Now a world heritage site, there has always been lively debate as to the exact purpose of Stonehenge however it stands today as one of the most pre-eminent ceremonial structures in the world.
Kent includes the towns of Tonbridge, a long established town famous for its castle and the delightful town of Tunbridge Wells. A wealthy town, that is elegant and chic, it has a wonderful country feel and atmosphere. Ashford is a market town, it has some attractive medieval houses. The importance of the town has grown since the arrival of a channel tunnel station.
Now the quickest trains take you to Calais in only 45 minutes from Ashford making day trips to the Continent an option worth considering. It is also a great base to explore the surrounding town and villages. The port of Dover has a castle and claim to the longest recorded history in the country, its location has made it of great importance in past conflicts. The famous white cliff's are in Dover from where above the English Channel you can see for many miles out to sea.
The county of Sussex contains the eclectic town of Brighton, a favourite location for Londoners less than an hour away by train, is a mixture of sophistication, the new and hip and traditional English seaside. North of Hastings, Battle is the site of the famous 1066 Norman Invasion and nearby Rye and Winchelsea also boast great scenery and great for exploring.
The town of Eastbourne in contrast to Brighton is a favourite with the over 65s with its relaxed pace of life, it has one of the best sunshine records in the UK and is a great place to go for sun lovers. Located in the stunning South Downs, the town of Arundel is dominated by the medieval castle that has been the historic home to the Dukes of Norfolk.
Further along the coast in Dorset there are many areas of most for the visitor. The Isle of Portland produces some of the finest building stone and has been used in some famous buildings. There is a very large manmade harbour, which is known as one of the best places in the country for water-sports enthusiasts. Weymouth is a lovely coastal town with a wide sweeping front, it has lots of charm and character. If fantastic beaches appeal, head for the blue waters and wonderful white sands of Lulworth Cove here you will be greeted by a wonderful beach.
Situated on the shores of the country’s biggest natural harbour are two of best loved and most famous seaside resorts, Bournemouth and Poole. Poole is the more historic town, dating back to the 13th century. It is now a great hit with water sports fans and in particular surfers how come to wide on its waves. Boasting a lively nightlife, it has much to offer. Bournemouth has Victorian roots that personify the historical passion for developing the seaside resorts. The Brownsea Island Nature Reserve offers visitors the chance to see an area that is rich with a wide variety of wildlife.
These are just some of the areas on the UK south coast, there are also many other areas worth visiting in the area. Being a relatively short distance from London by rail, coach or car, the areas are extremely popular and are under going a renaissance. The towns are growing and many urbanites are looking to the south coast to offer them a great getaway and for some a place to settle and enjoy the quality of life the area can offer.
