Surrey is sometimes referred to as the 'stockbroker belt', this affluent home county is located close by to London and boasts attractive towns and villages with leafy suburbs and some wonderful scenery for visitors to enjoy. The county has a number of towns and villages that make for an interesting visit, each has its own history, character and lifestyle.
Richmond is an elegant cosmopolitan town of cafes and boutiques and is home to the well known Richmond Park. Historically Kingston was once the place where the kings of England were crowned. Modern day Kingston is known for its great marketplace and variety of shopping opportunities.
Further in to the county of Surrey, Camberley has a number of shops in the shopping complex. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised to find the renowned Surrey leafiness is everywhere even in the town centres. It does give the feeling of being in England's green and pleasant land; creating very pleasant surroundings.
The historic town of Guildford is the county town of Surrey and is a favourite among visitors with many places of interest.
Located approx 30 miles from London, Guildford is located in the heart of the county and benefits from good transport and travel links with the A3, M3 and M25 close by and excellent rail links making the town an ideal place from which to explore Surrey and the south east of England.
Visitors will find a range of shopping and entertainment facilities and local amenities including a choice of shops, boutiques, bars, pubs and restaurants. There are regular street markets and farmers markets held in the historic town centre
Local attractions include the 11th century Guilford Castle, Dapdune Wharf that includes a number of displays and exhibitions on Surrey’s waterway, the 14th century Guildford Guildhall and Guildford Cathedral. The Guildford House Gallery featuring a range of art exhibitions located in the Grade I listed building.
Guildford Museum is located in the town centre and includes sections for archaeology, needlework, local history and art relating to Guildford and Surrey.
Dorking is a vibrant market town situated in the middle of the Surrey Hills, 12 miles east of Guildford. The history of the town goes back to Roman times. The famous West Street has a great selection of antique shops, which attract visitors from far and wide and is a just for antique enthusiasts.
Visitors will find a range of independent shops including the antiques quarter along with a dynamic arts scene. The historic St Martin’s Church in Dorking is well known for its spire making it one of the tallest in England and is an established local landmark.
Local places of interest include Dorking Halls, an entertainment venue featuring music, dance, comedy, opera, cinema and more. The Leith Music Festival has been established for over 100 years, the event is one of the UK’s leading choral events and takes place annually in April.
Local attractions include the Denbies Wine Estate set in over 250 acres, it is one of the largest privately owned vineyards in Europe. Wine connoisseurs can enjoy the estate tours that include wine tasting and there is a choice of restaurants to dine in with great views to enjoy. There is a guesthouse and garden centre on site, the venue also caters for wedding, conferences and functions.
Weybridge is situated in the heart of Surrey’s stockbroker belt and as one might imagine has a distinctly upmarket feel to it. The town is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the region. This quiet town has a relaxed atmosphere and is known for the famous Brooklands Museum.
The Brooklands Museum situated on the outskirts of Weybridge. The site is known for being the birthplace of British motor sports, the track was built back in 1907, and for many years speed records were set here. The museum includes lots of historical information and exhibits on both motor racing and aviation.
It is a must for motoring and aviation fans. The London Bus Museum is also located at the site, here visitors can see a range of buses, coaches and ancillary vehicles going back over a century. Elmbridge Museum showcases the history of the local area including Weybridge and other local towns and villages.
Kingston Upon Thames is an affluent, thriving market town located 20 miles from Guildford just over 10 miles from London.
Located on the banks of the River Thames, the history of the town dates back to medieval time; today visitors will find a bustling town that is a local centre for shopping; there are a choice of high street shopping facilities, shopping centres and boutiques along with a choice of traditional market stalls.
There are examples of Tudor architecture on some local buildings, the traditional is mixed with the contemporary here. There is a large bustling night scene here, with many bars, clubs, restaurants closely packed in the centre of the town.
The town is also a student town with Kingston University prominent. The young fashionable student feel can be found here along with the traditional character to give a town with an eclectic mix. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Thames where they will find a choice of riverside bars, pubs and restaurants offering riverside views.
Farnham is located 11 miles west of Guildford close to the border with neighbouring Hampshire. The Georgian town is noted for its rich history that is evident today; there are examples of fine Georgian architecture in the town and there are a number of old buildings, historic cottages and gardens.
History and heritage has been well preserved here with cobbled streets and a choice of shops and boutiques and traditional market squares. There are a choice of bars, traditional English pubs, upmarket wines bars and restaurants offering a choice of food and drink options.
Local attractions include 12th century Farnham Castle that overlooks the town, the castle is set in scenic gardens with tours available for visitors. The Museum of Farnham is located in a historic Grade I listed building that includes gardens offering an insight into local history and heritage.
Farnham Maltings is a place where visitors will find fairs, exhibitions, theatre and arts and crafts catering for a range of interests.
Farnham has a number of parks, gardens and forestry located close by including Victoria Gardens, Franham Park, Gostrey Meadow, Bourne Woods and Frensham Ponds, providing visitors with ideal surroundings for enjoying a leisurely walk, picnic and cycling.
The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was designated back in 1958 and covers approx one third of the county of Surrey. The hills are located across the North Downs running from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east.
In the south there are the Greensand Hills that include both the Devil’s Punch Bowl and Blackdown. Located in the heart of the hills are the river valleys of the Wey, Tillingbourne and Mole along with the heaths of Blackheath, Frensham and Thursley.
The hills offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest natural scenery and countryside in southern England along with the highest point in the South East of England at Leith Hill. There are plenty of footpaths alongside charming market towns and historic villages each with its own character and charm.
The scenic beauty of the area means visitors can find plenty of stunning views whilst taking in the fresh air and wide open spaces.
The leafy county of Surrey is just a stone's throw from London but with the delights one might expect to see in more rural areas. Great scenery and leafy towns and suburbs characterise this affluent county.
With its charming towns and villages there is plenty of character and visitors have plenty of places to explore including the wide open spaces of Richmond Park, the tradition and history at Hampton Court Palace and modern towns such as Kingston.
