Shropshire Attractions

Shropshire offers visitors a choice of local attractions in the county, visitors have a choice of a number of interesting and charming places to discover. The county has the landscape to offer the perfect countryside break along with museums, parks, gardens, a number of historic buildings, theatre, concerts and events. Shropshire’s location in the West Midlands means the tranquil English countryside and the great outdoors are all within reach located close to local towns and villages with a range of things to see and do in the county.

We have outlined a number of interesting attractions and places to visit for visitors to Shropshire, these include:

Shrewsbury Castle is located in Shrewsbury above the railway station. It dates back to the 11th century, the imposing castle is built with red sandstone and is located on a hill. Inside the castle features a number of displays visitors can see that showcases the history of the castle over the centuries. The Shropshire Regimental Museum is housed in the castle, visitors can view collections, artefacts and memorabilia from the 18th century up to the present day.

Shrewsbury Abbey is a historic church that dates back to the 11th century. The church is located to the east of Shrewsbury town centre and has been a place of worship since Anglo-Saxon time, the abbey is still an active place of worship and holds a number of events throughout the year. The abbey is of both historical and cultural significance and visitors can see the impressive architectural features including the large pillars at the nave. There is currently no charge to visit the abbey.

Ironbridge Gorge is located on the River Severn approx 5 miles from Telford. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and has the distinction of being a world heritage site. Visitors can see a number of exhibitions showing the industrial heritage of an area that was once fully engaged in mining, iron making, engineering and china manufacture. There are ten museums on the site that give visitors an interesting insight and a real experience of what it would have been like in the heyday of the industrial revolution.

Shropshire Hills Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty (AONB) is located mainly in the south of the county covering over 300 square miles of land, approx one quarter of the county of Shropshire. The area is noted for its landscape including hills, woods, river valleys and farmland. The landscape is rich in wildlife and geology and presents visitors with a stunning natural environment, varied landscapes with a chance to get away from it all.

The hills are regarded as among the finest landscapes in the UK, the area attracts many visitors with plenty to do including walking, cycling, and horse-riding, there are also a number of events that take place here. Visitors can explore a number of market towns in the region along with farmers markets, museums, galleries and small independent shops.

Telford Steam Railway is a heritage railway that operates on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until September each year. Visitors can enjoy a ride on the steam railway, the journey takes approx 30 minutes recreating a trip from railways golden period. There are a number of exhibitions and attractions at the site for visitors to explore.

The South Telford Heritage Trail is a 12 mile marked walking route that takes visitors through over 40 heritage sites in Telford. The trail starts and finishes in Telford Town Park and takes in a number of interesting attractions. The trail goes through Aqueduct, Coalbrookdale, Madeley, Jackfield and Stirchely and includes the famous Ironbridge site. Visitors can complete the whole trail in approx 5 to 6 hours or spilt in to smaller sections. The heritage trail provides a great way to see the sights of the local area including some lesser known sites.

Telford Shopping Centre is located in the heart of Telford. There are in excess of 150 retail outlet here including department stores and well known high street names such as Marks & Spencer, BHS and House of Fraser, along with designer stores providing shoppers with plenty of choice with stores catering for a range of budgets. There are a number of cafes, restaurants and eateries providing both cold and cold foods and drinks.

Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom is located in Preston-upon-the-Weald Moors, Shropshire approx 7 miles from Telford town centre. The farm offers a fun and educational day out for the whole family, there are in excess of 125 breeds of animals including deer, buffalo, meerkats, Llamas, snakes, turtles, tortoises and birds of prey. There are pony rides, a number of outdoor play areas for children, feeding demonstrations, educational talks and a gift shop for souvenirs offering visitors with plenty to see and do. Located in 32 acres of woodland, the farm in its current guise has been going since 1993 and has established itself as a favourite visitor attraction in the area.

Attingham Park is located 6 miles from Shrewsbury. The imposing mansion dates back to the 18th century and features a mansion, park and gardens. Inside the house highlights include the dining room that is set for an evening banquet. The house includes impressive decorates, furnishings and collections that have been collected over the years. The walled garden is impressive providing a place where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll. The mansion is set in scenic parkland providing a perfect opportunity for visitors to enjoy several walks in the park in a tranquil countryside setting that includes a range of trees and woodland. The park is home to fallow deer, visitors can watch deer being fed and the estate includes rivers and ponds in its grounds.

Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum Cosford is located in the Shropshire village of Cosford, 8 miles from Telford. The museum is home to one of the largest aviations collections in the UK, there are around 70 aircraft on display. Visitors can see the Cold War exhibition that includes displays of nuclear bomber aircraft. There are exhibitions showcasing war planes, missiles training and research and development. There are a number of interactive kiosks and hotspots that give visitors further insight and information. There is currently no entry charge for visitors.

Wroxeter Roman City is located 6 miles from Shrewsbury and is the forth largest Roman city in the UK. Visitors can take a tour of the historic ruins of the city that was once a fortress and civilian city populated by traders and sailors. Highlights among the remains include the municipal baths that date back to the 2nd century whilst a modern highlight is the new Roman Town House that gives visitors a great insight into Roman life. Visitors can see the site museum and use the audio tour to learn more about the fascinating history of the city.

It is recommended that prior to visiting the Shropshire; visitors do their research and ensure any sights and attractions they plan on visiting are actually open on the days you intend on coming. The transport is also worth checking as maintenance and engineering works can mean a restricted service on public transport and the road network.

Shropshire with its tranquil setting and scenic environment offers visitors a popular holiday and breaks destination. The area has plenty to offer visitors with a mix of charming historic market towns and villages including plenty of picturesque locations and scenic countryside to enjoy. There is the county town of Shrewsbury and Telford both offering visitors a good base from which to explore the area along with their own town attractions. Shropshire includes a number of historic attractions, museums, historic houses, gardens and parks with attractions for the entire family.
