Yorkshire Attractions

Yorkshire offers visitors a choice of local attractions in the county, visitors have a choice of a number of interesting and charming places to discover. Yorkshire is made up of North, South, West and East Riding of Yorkshire counties, the various counties include a varied landscape to offer the perfect countryside break along with museums, parks, gardens, a number of historic buildings, theatre, concerts and events. Yorkshire’s various counties are located in the north of England with the tranquil English countryside and the great outdoors all within reach located close to local cities, towns and villages with a range of things to see and do in the area.

We have outlined a number of interesting attractions and places to visit for visitors to Yorkshire, these include:

Ripley Castle, that has been home of the Ingilby family for several hundred years. Steeped in history tours are available for visitors to learn more about this fascinating castle. There are also gardens and deer park that has plenty of wildlife to enjoy. There is also a gift shop and a tea room where you can relax and enjoy the nation’s favourite drink.

Castle Howard is named after Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. The rather extravagant baroque estate of Castle Howard has a trademark dome that stands 80 feet above the opulent mansion that was started by Sir John Vanbrugh back in 1699. The interior of the castle is impressive too, there are fine collections in furniture, art, porcelain and sculpture, making this estate an imposing, grand affair.

Harewood House in Leeds is home to the Queen's cousin, the Earl of Harewood, the house provides a great day out for the whole family. There is an outstanding art collections, grand State Rooms and fascinating 'Below Stairs' exhibitions. The house is set among spectacular grounds, there are also formal gardens and woodland walks, and a trip here is likely to entertain the family. Visitors can view the great collections inside the house before exploring further the Gardens and Bird Garden, you can then take a boat trip across the lake and children can really enjoy themselves in the Adventure Playground. There is a full programme of events and exhibitions.

The most famous tourist attraction in York is York Minster, which is the largest Medieval Gothic cathedral north of the Alps and a treasure house of 800 years of stained glass. There are some truly stunning views to be enjoyed from the top of the tower. There are Roman, Saxon and Norman remains amid the foundations. The Chapter house is a building from the medieval period with beautiful carved stone. Central Tower presents visitors with the best viewpoint in York, however the climb does require some stamina to complete. The crypt contains the oldest parts of the building and is located below the choir. The building is widely regarded as an artistic and architectural masterpiece.

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Park is situated on the banks of the River Skell, in North Yorkshire. The site is a world heritage site for its outstanding historic and aesthetic importance. The Abbey ruins provide the dramatic location for the 18th century landscape garden at Studley Royal, which is one of the few surviving examples of a Georgian Green garden, featuring ponds, temples, lakes, statues, bridges and cascades. There are plans to ensure Studley Royal Water Garden is restored to recreate the originally planned garden back in the 18th century. The site is administered by the National Trust and has an area of over 800 acres.

Mother Shipton’s Cave are situated in the forests of the quiet town of Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. Mother Shipton who lived 500 years ago during the reigns of Henry VIII among others, becoming famous for her prophetic visions, which became feared throughout the UK. Mother Shipton was born in the cave, which is situated near the geological phenomenon of The Petrifying Well, thought to have miraculous healing properties. Visitors can explore the Mother Shipton Estate as well as viewing the cave and Petrifying Well. There are a number of facilities here including refreshments, picnic area and children's play area and museum.

The West Yorkshire Playhouse makes for an interesting place to visit for theatre fans. Located in the city centre in Leeds, the theatre that opened in 1990 has gained a good reputation as an exciting producing theatre. The playhouse complex has a range of facilities including The Quarry Theatre , the smaller Courtyard Theatre, a CAMRA award-winning bar, a restaurant, a gallery and a cyber cafe among many others. The West Yorkshire Playhouse produces a number of its own shows each year in its two theatres, and stages over 1,000 performances, workshops, readings and other community events. The complex is also often used as a meeting place for business and pleasure.

Eureka is the national children’s museum located in Halifax. Eureka is an interactive children’s museum inspiring children to lean more about themselves and the world. The museum is aimed at children from 0 to 11 where they can benefit from informal learning experimenting, exploring and testing their imagination and senses. There are a number of different galleries children can explore including catch a wave and build a house and there is an outdoor fun packed play area. There are a number of museum exhibits to see and an extensive programme of events.

The RHS Garden Harlow Carr is located in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The Royal Horticultural Society Gardens in Harlow Carr are located among 58 acres of tranquil, scenic surroundings offering visitors a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a relaxing stroll in a scenic setting. Highlights include the gardens through time showing gardens through the course of the past 200 years, there is also the Kitchen Garden, Scented Garden and Streamside Garden to explore. Refreshments are available in the tea rooms and shop where visitors can find homemade cakes, pastries, sandwiches, teas and coffees.

Flamingo Land is a theme park and zoo located in Malton in North Yorkshire. Located in 375 acres of scenic countryside, there is plenty for visitors to enjoy there, a theme park, zoo and holiday resort all in one. The theme park includes a number of extreme rides for those after adrenaline fix including the cliff hanger and sky flyer, in addition there a number of family rides and kids rides offering something for everyone. There are a number of eateries serving hot and cold food and drinks.

The zoo includes in excess of 140 species of mammals, birds and reptiles including flamingos, penguins, lions, hippos, rhinos, tigers, pythons, tortoises, kangaroos and many others including farm animals. The zoo plays a leading role in animal conservation and has a number of displays, demonstrations, events, talks and trails for visitors to discover. A visit to Flamingo Land provides a fun filled action packed and educational day out for the whole family.

It is recommended that prior to visiting the Yorkshire; visitors do their research and ensure any sights and attractions they plan on visiting are actually open on the days you intend on coming. The transport is also worth checking as maintenance and engineering works can mean a restricted service on public transport and the road network.

Yorkshire is well known for its natural scenery and open spaces in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks offering visitors a popular holiday and breaks destination. The area has plenty to offer visitors with a mix of charming historic market towns and villages including plenty of picturesque locations and scenic countryside to enjoy. There is the cities of Leeds, Bradford and York all of which offer visitors a good base from which to explore the area along with their own city attractions. Yorkshire includes a number of historic attractions, museums, historic houses, gardens and parks with attractions for the entire family.
