Channel Islands Travel & Transport

The transport system in the Channel Islands, offers visitors a number of ways to get around from public transport such as buses and trains to using the road with car hire, coaches and ferries.

Buses
Local bus services in Channel Islands provide services to local areas across the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. In Jersey the main bus routes are connected via Liberation Station in St Helier with 19 bus routes available to destinations across the island.

In Guernsey there are bus routes offering services across the island taking in most of the attractions and places of interest. Buses offer a cost effective option with frequent services available.

Trains
Train Tours are available on the Little Trains that operate out of Liberation Square in St Helier, Jersey. There are two routes available which give commentary to customers in both English and French. One route offers visitors a history of St Helier, the Harbour area and the Waterfront; the journey is approx 40 minutes.

The other route is travels along St Aubin’s Bay and includes commentaries; the journey is approx 30 minutes each way.

Public Transport Safety Tips
Most journeys on public transport go ahead without incident, in order to minimise the chances of any incidents, passengers may wish to consider the following safety tips:

- Be aware of your belongings at all times.
- Do not leave your bags and belongings unattended at any time.
- Stay alert and aware of your environment and those around you.
- Do not show valuables including money and jewellery in public.
- If you are carrying a bag/handbag, ensure you use a bag that has a strong good quality strap and wear it across your shoulder (not on your shoulder), with the pockets closed facing towards your waist. Carrying the bag on your shoulder makes it much easier for criminals to snatch the bag or cut the strap.
- Be careful and cautious in crowds and beware of pickpockets, do not leave anything valuable showing in public including wallets in back trouser pockets.
- Sit in carriages with other passengers do not sit in carriages with no/fewer passengers.
- Try not to use smaller/isolated stations especially at night.
- When waiting for buses, trains, boats and taxis stand with other passengers in an area that is well lit, do not stand/wait in isolated areas.


Car
There are a number of car hire firms in Channel Islands that offer car rental services for both short and longer term car hire offering a range of vehicles from small budget cars to family cars to larger mini-buses and luxury cars.

On Jersey the towns and villages are linked via the A roads and the smaller roads. Major roads around the island include the A1, A4, A8, A9 and A13. The island is compact in nature and travelling distances within the island are small, a trip from St Helier to St Ouen across the island is 8 miles with a journey time of 20 minutes.

Parking in St Helier includes on street parking and off street car parks. Major car parks in St Helier include Nelson Street, Minden Place, Sand Street and Green Street, .

Drivers should note there may be driving restrictions in and around the city and town centres. It is recommended visitors ensure they fully understand the local parking rules before parking and help avoid unnecessary fines and worry.


Coaches
There are a number of coach operators in Jersey and Guernsey offering a choice of coach tours across the islands, the tours take in major attractions, places of interest, gardens and take in most of bays on the islands. Bicycle
With a number of quiet countryside roads and lanes Jersey is well suited for cyclists; it provides a cost effective and healthy way of seeing the scenic island up close. Cyclists can see the scenic countryside and coastline whilst taking in the various tourist attractions across the island.

In Guernsey there are a number of cycle hire companies where visitors can rent bicycles to explore the scenic island, there are a number of cycle routes allowing cyclists to explore the island at their own leisure.

Air
The Channel Islands have good air links with airports in the UK; there are regular services from London City Airport, Gatwick, Southend and London Luton to Jersey Airport, the average flight time from London is approx 45-50 minutes. Airline operators offering services to the island include British Airways, easyJet, Flybe, Jet2.com, FlyVLM, BMI, Air Berlin and Aer Lingus. There are flights from airports across the UK including Liverpool, Isle of Man, Southampton, Bristol, Exeter and London City.

Guernsey Airport is located approx 10 -15 minutes drive from St Peter Port; the airport is served by several airlines including Flybe, Blue Islands, FlyVLM and Air Berlin. There are flights to Guernsey from a number of UK airports including Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London City and Bristol.

Ferry
There are a number of ferry services between Jersey and the UK mainland. Condor Ferries offers services from the south coast of England to Jersey and Guernsey with services from Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth. From Portsmouth there are slow daily services to the Channel islands whilst from Weymouth and Poole there are fast daily ferry services (2 and a half hours instead of 7-10 for the slower ferry service).

Condor also has services from St Malo in France to Guernsey and services between Jersey and Guernsey.
