The transport system in the county of Hertfordshire, one of the home counties offers visitors a number of ways to get around from public transport such as buses and trains to using the road with car hire and coaches.

Buses
Local bus services in Hertfordshire provide services to local areas and across the county, with a number of routes covering Watford, Rickmansworth, the city of St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Stevenage, Bishop’s Stortford, Hitchin, Welwyn Garden City and Tring.

Trains
Trains in Hertfordshire serve a number of routes across the county and to other areas. There are several mainline rail routes offering local and regional services. Watford Junction Station has services to London Euston station with a journey time of approx 20-25 minutes. There are local services to Garston, St Albans Abbey, Hemel Hempstead and Tring and further to Coventry, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Milton Keynes Central.

St Albans City station (known as St Albans station) is the larger and busier of the two stations in the town the other being St Albans Abbey station. From St Albans City there are services to a number of London stations including St Pancreas International, Farringdon, City Thameslink and Blackfriars, the journey time to central London is approx 35 to 40 minutes. There are also services to south London suburban stations including Sutton and further to Brighton on the south coast.

Train services are provided several train operators including First Capital Connect; Cross Country and London Midland

Other railway stations in Hertfordshire include Bishop's Stortford, Elstree & Borehamwood, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Potters Bar, Stevenage and Tring.

Underground (Tube)
The London Underground extends into parts of Hertfordshire via the Metropolitan Line and London Overground, there are services from various stations in central London including Baker Street, Euston, Farringdon and Moorgate to stations in Hertfordshire including Watford Junction, Chorleywood, Rickmansworth and Bushey. Public Transport Safety Tips
Most journeys on public transport in go ahead without incident, in order to minimise the chances of any incidents, passengers may wish to consider the following safety tips:

- Be aware of your belongings at all times.
- Do not leave your bags and belongings unattended at any time.
- Stay alert and aware of your environment and those around you.
- Do not show valuables including money and jewellery in public.
- If you are carrying a bag/handbag, ensure you use a bag that has a strong good quality strap and wear it across your shoulder (not on your shoulder), with the pockets closed facing towards your waist. Carrying the bag on your shoulder makes it much easier for criminals to snatch the bag or cut the strap.
- Be careful and cautious in crowds and beware of pickpockets, do not leave anything valuable showing in public including wallets in back trouser pockets.
- Sit in carriages with other passengers do not sit in carriages with no/fewer passengers.
- Try not to use smaller/isolated stations especially at night.
- When waiting for buses, trains, boats and taxis stand with other passengers in an area that is well lit, do not stand/wait in isolated areas.


Car
There are a number of car hire firms in Hertfordshire that offer car rental services for both short and longer term car hire offering a range of vehicles from small budget cars to family cars to larger mini-buses and luxury cars.

Hertfordshire is connected to the road network via the M1, M25 and A1(M). Central London to St Albans by car via the A41 and M1 is a drive of approx 45 minutes depending on traffic. Other major roads around the county include the A414, A602 and A10.

Parking in St Albans city centre includes a number of pay and display and pay on exit car parks. Major car parks in St Albans city centre include Victoria Street, St Albans Station, London Road, Drovers Way, Russell Avenue, Verulamium and Adelaide Street car parks.

Drivers should note there may be driving restrictions in and around the city and town centres. It is recommended visitors ensure they fully understand the local parking rules before parking and help avoid unnecessary fines and worry.


Coach
Hertfordshire is accessible by coach with regular coach services available to Hertfordshire from London Victoria coach station, the journey time from London to St Albans is between 2 hours and 30 minutes and 3 hours depending on the service, time of day & traffic. There are also services from London to Watford Junction, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Hatfield, Bishop’s Stortford and Stevenage. Coach services are provided by National Express.

Whilst travelling by coach to Hertfordshire is usually more time consuming than using rail and road, it is usually more cost effective.


Air
Heathrow Airport is located in 28 miles from St Albans with a journey time of approx 45 minutes by car. The airport caters for a number of domestic, international, short and long haul flights.

London Luton Airport is located 12 miles north of St Albans, the airport caters for a number of local and international flights.
