The best known site in Wiltshire is Stonehenge, a truly world famous ancient site located approx 10 miles from Salisbury. The impressive prehistoric monument is of outstanding importance, has been designated a World Heritage Site. Stonehenge is surrounded by remains of ceremonial and domestic structures some of these are thought to be older than the monument. Most of these features including earthworks, burial mounds and the other circular 'henge' monuments are accessible both by road or footpath.
Stonehenge's orientation on the rising and setting sun has always been one of its great features and there has been much debate and discussion this. Some feel those that built it came from a sun-admiring culture, whilst others say the circle and its banks were part of a huge astrological calendar, this is open to debate and interpretation. The huge stone circle at the world heritage site in Avebury is among the most impressive prehistoric sites in the UK. The site is among the most complex of the surviving Neolithic henge monuments in the UK. Silbury Hill the largest man made mound in Europe and mystery remains as to its main purpose, it is part of the Avebury site.
Stourhead House and Gardens are located close to Mare in Wiltshire, approx 28 miles from Salisbury. Stourhead includes a Palladian Mansion and renowned gardens. The imposing mansion includes the regency library and impressive collections of furniture and paintings. The gardens are acknowledged as among the finest landscaped gardens in the world providing the highlight of any visit here. The gardens date back to the 18th century, include a lake and wonderful lawns and parkland.
Walkers will enjoy the excellent walks that can be done along the Kennet and Avon Canal; here the towpath has been turned into a waterside trail. The Ridgeway Path starts near Avebury and stretches north-east into Buckinghamshire providing a longer walking path. The Ridgeway has been used as a trail for many years and it passes close by to a number of ancient sites and varying landscapes.
