Trekking has a number of factors that attract people to it, the adventure is an important element for those wanting adventure, the challenge is crucial to some seeking their next challenge. The sense of freedom to roam in the vast open spaces and the thought of being closer to nature and the natural world are also points people look to when considering trekking.

There are a number of trekking holidays available, one that has reached near cult status is trekking in the Andes. Holidays incorporating The Inca trail take you to Peru where you can follow the trail seeing the snow capped mountains, lakes such as Titicaca and seeing how the local community live. The trail to Machu Picchu takes in historical ruins and rainforests, the tour will show some of the most spectacular scenery along with plenty of history. For those seeking extra adventure you can stay in an Amazonian lodge as part of some trips where you can go canoeing and see the lush forest with its abundance of flora.

If the Inca Trail has cult status in Latin America then trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro certainly has cult status in Africa. The mountain provides some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world and can be views from miles around with its snow capped top. Trekking up the more challenging Machame route allows for stunning views to be taken in. The challenging nature of the mountain means a guide is needed and they accompany you both on the ascend and on the way down. Evoking memories of Hemingway's 'Snows of Kilimanjaro' Kilimanjaro is one of the world's most spectacular sights soaring to nearly 6,000m above the open plains filled with game.

Trekking in Nepal home of the Himalayas is for some the ultimate challenge, the snow capped mountains and harsh conditions are not for the faint hearted. However the challenged posed by the region is immense, by trekking in the region you will see monasteries and the local communities who inhabit the area. Treks are available to climb Kala Pattar (over 5,500m high) where the reward is spectacular views of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak.

A trip to Borneo trekking is sure to excite the trekking enthusiast, Borneo has a landscape perfect for adventure whether it is the lush forests, rivers or the national parks. Trips include going to Bako National Park, the hone of many unusual wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards and many species of rare plants. Trips can also include going to the Lemanak River, where staying in a traditional Iban longhouse you can learn about the lives and customs of the local people. A trip to Mulu caves in the Gunung Mulu National Park is a worthy accompaniment to any trip, the awesome sight of some of the largest caves in South East Asia is awe inspiring.

It is important to ensure that you have done the correct preparation for trekking including being sufficiently fit, packing trip essentials and ensuring that your travel insurance covers you adequately for the activities you will be taking part in. There are many insurance policies that do not cover trekking & other activities so it is important to double check before you go and add any extra cover needed. Trekking holidays offer plenty of adventure and the chance to be in the great outdoors and with ever more trips available, the choice has never been so great.
