The stunning Czech capital is now a truly 21st century city with a thriving tourist industry, yet it still retains its historical charm and its competitive prices when matched against other popular European cities. Here is why Prague makes a fantastic weekend break.
Firstly, the Czech Republic is not particularly well known for its food within the context of Europe, yet in Prague itself the citizens are immensely proud of their gastronomic heritage and traditions. Czech dumplings are a particular favourite and can come in the form of a savoury aside to meat or a dessert filled with sweet fruit and served with thick, creamy Czech custard – a treat not to be missed. There are also many good Czech wines around, and the local flavoured spirits are a must. Of course, another great feature is the price. Though Prague is still in the midst of a major economic growth spurt, it is still spectacularly cheap for eating and drinking: one of the reasons it has become such a popular tourist destination.
Prague also has plenty to offer any lover of culture. For history buffs, and anyone with a passion for beautiful buildings and scenery, the old town is a delight, and for those seriously interested in the troubling history of the city itself the Museum of Communism provides a comprehensive grounding. As regards the art world, amongst the numerous galleries scattered around the city one particularly unusual gem is the museum dedicated to Mucha – one of the first graphic designers to work in advertising and whose iconic works are recognised world over. For those who prefer music, the opera house in Prague has a continuous and impressive programme at a fraction of Covent Garden prices.
Transport and accommodation are easy to find and also relatively inexpensive in the city. For young Inter-Railers wishing to make a longer stop on their travels, Prague is frequently the destination of choice due to its versatility, fantastic nightlife and cheap trains. There are plenty of hostels and good hotels available for booking online, often including deals on opera tickets or gallery entrance prices, so it’s always worth doing a little internet research before booking, in order to get the very most out of two days in Prague.
