Beaumaris Castle is a historic castle located on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. The castle dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries and along with Conwy, Caernarfon, Harlech Castles, is considered a prime example of 13th and 14th century military architecture in Europe and is part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd World Heritage Site. The impressive castle has been described as one of the most technically perfect castle in the UK. The castle is known for its perfect symmetry despite never being completed. Built from local stone the castle has been involved in historical events including in the English Civil War and during the 19th century travellers and painters were drawn to the romantic nature of the castle’s ruins. The castle is currently managed by the Welsh government and is a popular tourist attraction.
Attractions
Beaumaris Castle is located in the Welsh town of Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey off the north west coast of Wales. The building of the castle stated at the end of the 13th century however after an estimated £15,000 was spend, a very large sum of money for the time, funds were diverted elsewhere and the castle was never fully completed. The high towers ensure the castle retains an imposing look the fortification was designed in a grand way and on a grand scale.
The highlights outside and inside the castle include the Towers the large towers never actually reached their full height and never got their turrets as a result of their incomplete construction. There is a water filled moat on the outside and there are concentric ‘walls within walls’ here in contrast to Conwy Castle where they were deemed not necessary. The impressive fortification was part of Edward I’s huge building programme in north Wales aimed at consolidating power in the region.
The Outer Ward includes twelve turrets in the curtain wall that is surrounded by a moat. The main entrance to the castle was the entrance located next to the sea which allowed the castle to the supplied directly by sea. The Inner Ward has walls that are thicker than the outer walls and includes the North & South Gatehouses and was intended to include accommodation along with kitchen, hall and more although it is not certain that they were built or completed due to the construction of the castle being curtailed. The castle offers a wonderful place for visitors to explore with a number of narrow passages and spiral tower, visitors can see some inspiring scenery across the Menai Strait.
The castle is part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd, UNESCO World Heritage Site having been inscribed by in 1986. The castle is regarded as an outstanding reference point for medieval history and architecture. The castle conveys a wonderful sense of history and heritage presenting a fascinating attraction full of character and charm.
How to Get There
The site is accessible by both car and public transport.
By Car:
The distance from London is approx 280 miles with a journey time of approx 5 hours to 5 hours 30 minutes depending on traffic and time of day.
Beaumaris is located on the Isle of Anglesey in north Wales, from London take the A40, then the M40 then the M42 and M6 up to junction 20 and exit on to the M56, take the exit to North Wales, continue on the M56 until the A494, then take the A55. Continue until junction 8A on the A55 and take the exit for the A545 and continue until Castle Street in Beaumaris.
From Cardiff the distance is approx 185 miles with a journey time of approx 4 hours 30 minutes. From Cardiff take north road, then take the A470 all the way until the junction with the A487, then take the A5, then the A545 that goes to Beaumaris.
Parking facilities include limited street parking facilities with pay and display parking available close by to the castle.

By Train:
From London there are services from London Euston station to Bangor railway station & from Chester there are services to Bangor railway station. The journey time is approx 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours depending on the connection. Bangor station is located 7 miles from the castle, visitors can either get a taxi to the castle from Bangor or use the bus service from Bangor to Beaumaris, services are provided by Padarnbus on the route 58 service to Bangor | Menai Bridge | Beaumaris | Penmon. The journey time is approx 50 minutes.

Opening Times:
Beaumaris Castle is for most of the year except a few days over the Christmas period and New Years Day:
Mon to Sun: 09.30 to 17.00 (March to end of June & September & October); 09.30 to 18.00 (July & August); Mon to Sat: 10.00 to 16.00 & Sun: 11.00 to 16.00 (November to end of February) – Please Note: last admissions at 30 minutes prior to closing time.
