The port city of Liverpool is located in Merseyside in the North West of England approx one hour from Manchester. The city gained prominence as a major port city with large amounts of trade passing through its port in the 18th and 19th centuries. The city was home to traditional manufacturing industries and when these closed the city faced very tough times. The city has been subject to a number of regeneration projects in the past few decades and it has emerged with a new found confidence.
The city was the European Capital of Culture in 2008 and is also a World Heritage City in recognition of the historical, cultural and social significance of the city. The city has long been a centre for the arts and culture in the UK and is internationally renowned for producing a number of acclaimed singers, artists, poets and playwrights. The city is known for its port side setting with Pier Head one of its most recognisable sights. Liverpool is both a university city and the administrative, cultural and financial centre for the Merseyside region. with locals known as Liverpudlians. Liverpool attracts many visitors each year from the UK and internationally offering a range of historic, cultural and contemporary attractions.
