There are officially 6 cities located across Wales, the largest and capital city is Cardiff located in south Wales with a population of around 350,000. Cardiff is the most popular visitor destination in Wales attracting tourist from across the UK and beyond. The city of St David’s is located in Pembrokeshire in south west Wales with a population of under 2,000 it is the smallest city in the UK in terms of size and population.

In Northern Wales, Bangor is located in Gwynedd and is one of two cities located in north Wales. Known as a university city, Bangor is located close to the beaches of north Wales and the Snowdonia National Park. St Asaph is a city located east of Bangor closer to the border with north west England. St Asaph was historically a city but was not officially regarded as one up to 2012, then as part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations St Asaph formally became a city again.

In Mid Wales, there are currently no cities, the area is sparkly populated with small towns and villages and includes the Cambrian Mountains.

In Southern Wales, the largest and best known city is the capital Cardiff, that includes a choice of attractions, places of interest, dining options, accommodation and entertainment. Cardiff has become a popular short and weekend breaks destination offering good accommodation, leisure facilities and attractions at reasonable rates. Swansea is located to the west of Cardiff, it is the second largest and most populous city in Wales. Newport is located 15 miles north west of Cardiff, it is both a cathedral and university city having been a port dating back to medieval times. St David’s is a compact city located on the south west Pembrokeshire coast, known for its cathedral whilst Whitesands Bay beach described as one of the finest beaches in the UK and the world is located a few miles away.
