Attractions

Copped Hall was once an ancient hunting park and a large rural estate, its history goes back to the 12th Century and possibly even further back. The mansion that stands on the current site dates back to the mid 18th century, when it was built it replaced the Tudor mansion that had previously occupied the site.

The main house was badly damaged by fire in 1917, after the Wythe family had allowed the Army to use Copped Hall as a hospital during the First World War The fire devastated the house to its shell and it was thought the house would be restored. However this did not unfortunately happen and there were a number of years when the house had a precarious and uncertain future and by the 1950s large mansions were no longer de rigour and were in the process of being demolished.

The M25 Motorway was built through a corner of the park and there were calls for the mansion to be redeveloped. A determined group of protesters ensured in 1993 the Copped Hall Trust was formed and in 1995 the Trust secured the future of the site by purchasing the mansion and the gardens. The primary aim of the Trust is to both protect and help restore the site and its gardens for the benefit of the community.

The current house was sold to George Wythes back in 1869 and his grandson carried out some extensive improvements to the house and grounds. These included adding a conservatory and a new extension which was used for storing food, there were also preparation areas that were added to the basement, ground floor staff offices and guest bedrooms on the first and second floors.

Copped Hall is a Grade II listed building reflecting the historical, architectural and cultural importance associated with the site.

The Gardens have had a lot of restoration work done, the ancient yew tree walk (King Henry’s Walk) that was previously has been replanted. Visitors can see the fruits of the restoration and renovation work in the gardens in the Long and Rock Gardens.

The Kitchen Garden at the site was first built here in the 1740s and is approx 4 acres in size. Back in 1999 the garden was in need of repair and renovation, it had become overgrown, however the garden has been transformed in subsequent years with a late 19th century glasshouse being restored with more to follow. The garden is blooming again and is producing fruit, vegetables and flowers once more.
