Frogmore House is located in the private Home Park of Windsor Castle. The
house is renowned for its 18th century lake and scenic landscaped garden, the historic house was much loved by Queen Victoria and offers visitors another attraction in Windsor in addition to the famous Windsor Castle located close by. The house is full of history and heritage and contains the interests of many generations of the royal family that have stayed here. During the summer months there are tours available where visitors can take a guided tour of the house and explore the lake and scenic gardens.


Attractions


Frogmore House is located a short distance from Windsor Castle and offers visitors the chance to visit a historic royal house that contains much heritage to reflect its long history. The house was a firm favourite of Queen Victoria and she decided to build a Mausoleum for herself and Prince Albert with in the grounds. The house has a peaceful and tranquil setting and has been a country residence of a number of monarchs from the 17th century onwards.

However it is with Queen Victoria that the house has become synonymous with. The house was among the favourite retreats for Queen Victoria and she along with Prince Albert is buried here at the Mausoleum. Officially the house is not currently a Royal Residence however the property and its gardens are still used for official uses such as for receptions.

Historically the estates came under Royal ownership back in the 16th century during King Henry VIII reign with the original house built from 1680 to 1684, the house has since undergone a number of revisions, alterations and extensions from a number of monarchs. The house was given to the Duchess of Kent by her daughter Queen Victoria in 1841 whilst notably Earl Mountbatten of Burma was born at Frogmore House in 1900 and in the early part of the 20th century King George V and Queen Mary had frequent trips to the house.

The House and its interior in particular are strongly influenced by both the talents and interests of its Royal occupants over the years. Princess Elizabeth the daughter of George III was an amateur artist and painted the decorative panels that are still on view in the Cross Gallery.

Art Works by a number of generations of the Royal family are contained in the Victoria Closet where visitors can see works of art executed by three generations of the royal family, there are works by Queen Victoria and Princess Victoria and Princess Louise.

The Garden is among the highlights of any visit to the house and one if its great features. Queen Charlotte how had a keen interest in botany laid out the garden with a range of plants that are both rare and unusual. She also made the botanical library and ensured that flowers became a leading feature of the house. Mary Moser, a flower painter was commissioned to help decorate a room with garlands of flowers.

In the 1980s the house underwent a period of restoration and was opened to the public in 1990, the house has a total of 18 bedrooms with a number of the rooms displaying decorations from both the 18th and 19th centuries. The famous gardens are approx 33 acres in size and contain not only the Mausoleum but also the Queen Victoria Tea House.

A trip to the house takes visitors to a historic and fascinating country house where generations of the Royal family have left their unique contributions to the house and its heritage. The scenic location and proximity to Windsor Castle mean a trip here is well worth considering for visitors to Windsor.


How to Get There


The house is accessible by both car and public transport.

By Car:

Windsor is located just over 20 miles from London and is accessed from London from the M4 Motorway that takes you to Windsor, exit at junction 6 that is signposted Slough and Windsor, from the exit follow the signs for Windsor.

There is parking available at the site, alternatively there are various car parking facilities in the town of Windsor that are within a 5 to 15 minute walk of the House. Motorists should understand, be aware of the parking rules and strictly adhere to the parking rules to help avoid any parking sanctions.

For those using Satellite Navigation systems the postcode to use is SL4 1NJ.


By Train:

Windsor Riverside station is located close by to the House and there are services operating from London Waterloo station, the journey time is approx 55 minutes. There are also trains to Windsor available from London Paddington station.


By Bus/Coach:

There are various local Windsor bus routes that serve the area, there are services from Heathrow Terminal 5 where route number 77 takes visitors close to the House in central Windsor. Journey time is approx 35 minutes from Terminal 5.

Coach services include Green Line, which operates a daily coach service from Victoria Coach Station in central London to Windsor.

National Express offer coach services from a choice of towns and cities to Windsor, these include Victoria Station in London, Reading and Heathrow Airport. Travelling by coach to Windsor can offer a great value way to enjoy a day out at reasonable cost.

The guided tour lasts for approx 90 minutes and an average visit would take approx 2 hours.

The house may have times when it is closed or closes early or operates alternative opening hours at short notice. It is recommended visitors check all opening and closing times and specific days visits are open when booking to get the latest information & avoid disappointment, as changes can occur.

There may be some variations on the opening hours depending on the time of year and the attraction you wish to see. It is wise to double check before going to ensure the attraction you wish to see is open and avoid disappointment.

Always remain alert, vigilant and aware of your belongings at all times especially your wallet/purse and valuables and ensure they are hidden away from public view. If you have a bag try to use a shoulder bag with a good quality, strong strap, that is put across your shoulder not on your shoulder making it more difficult for anyone to take your bag.

If you are travelling by car to Frogmore House ensure you are well prepared with maps and Sat Nav to aid your journey, particularly if you are not familiar with the local area and roads. Check traffic information & news for up to date travel news.

If you are looking for car parking close to the House, ensure you fully understand the rules, regulations & charges for car parks and street parking. The rules & regulations can be complex & confusing if you are unclear, it is wise not to park there.

If you are travelling by public transport, check for service updates prior to beginning your journey for any delays, disruption or cancellations to services that may impact on your journey. Ensure you have the service timetables for the trains, trams, buses and coaches.
