Maunsel House is a historic manor house located near Taunton in Somerset. The house is located on the large estate and is set in wonderful surroundings in the scenic setting of the countryside. Visitors to the house can get an in depth guided tour of the fascinating house and learn more about the rich history and tradition associated with the house and the Slade family.

Attractions


Maunsel House is an impressive Manor house that dates back to the 13th century. The house is located within 100 acres of beautiful parkland providing a perfect backdrop. The estate here comprises approx 2,000 acres and includes lakes, farms, woodland, orchards and cottages among others.

The house is the ancestral home of the Slade Family, the house is regularly used for a number of events including weddings parties, conferences and filming. After the Slade family became owners they built two additional wings to Maunsel from 1772 and 1868. In recent years the house and the estate have been subject to an ambitious restoration programme.

St Michael Church is a Saxon church that is the traditional final resting place for members of the Slade family. The church is located within the Maunsel estate and is known as among the smallest churches in the UK with a small seating capacity of approx 50 people. There are a number of Yew trees located on the walkway to the church and with the tower and stained glass windows the church provides a romantic setting.

The Ballroom is a room that has high ceilings and is very light, the attractive room has French windows that open out on to the lawn outside. The ballroom is an imposing room that has been opulently decorated with ornate designs illustrated by the windows all being framed with pale gold silk curtains. The Ballroom is a popular location for civil wedding ceremonies and wedding breakfasts.

The Dining room is noted for the Regency French windows along with the high ceilings. When opened the windows allow guests to go in to the well kept lawns. Visitors will find an elegant sage green room, with impressive furniture and decorations, the centrepiece of the room is the large walnut dining table that is 16 feet in length.

The Library provides a place for people to sit and relax in the historic surroundings with a Victorian Gothic theme. The fireplace is the main focus in the room providing a wonderful period feature. The room is full of history with family portraits including those of recent Slade family members. The library has French windows which when opened reveal the conservatory that leads in to the walled orchard garden and provides a great place for an enjoyable stroll.

The Garden and Grounds are impressive, here visitors can find views they can really enjoy. There are number of features to look out for including the series of lakes, a range of wild birds in the marshlands and the canal. The scenic setting offers visitors a chance to experience the delights of the English countryside with a great feeling of space and tranquilly


How to Get There


The house can be accessed by both car and public transport:

By Car:

Taunton is located in Somerset approx 160 miles from central London with Maunsel another 6 miles from Taunton, the approx journey time is 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes. From London take the A4 then the M4 and drive to junction 20 and take the M5, exit the M5 at junction 24 and follow the signs for North Petherton, drive through the North Petherton village and take a left turn on to Newton Road towards North Newton, it is sign posted for Canal side car parking and Maunsel House.

Drive for approx one and a half miles crossing back over the motorway and into the North Newton village and take a left turn at the brown signs for Maunsel House and follow then to the driveway.

For those using Satellite Navigation systems the postcode is TA7 0BU.

By Train:

From London Paddington Station central London trains are available to Taunton with a journey time of approx 2 and a half hours. Visitors can then get a taxi to the house from the station, the station is approx 6 miles from the house.

By Coach:

National Express offers services from London Victoria Coach Station to Taunton, the journey time is approx 4 hours to 4 hours 30 minutes. From Taunton visitors can get a taxi to the house for the last 6 miles.

Guided Tours are available by appointment only, they are given by Sir Benjamin Slade who gives an in depth insight in to the house.
