Attractions

Stonor Park is located a few miles from Henley-on-Thames, it has been the family home of Lord and Lady Camoys and the Stonor family for over centuries and continues to be a family home. The house was originally built in the late 12th century and over the next 600 years was gradually developed until the end of the 18th century. The house is well known for its great collections and displays of tapestries, ceramics, bronzes and portraits among others.

The Art Collection is well known and reflects wide ranging tastes. The family portraits date back to the 16th century until the 20th century showing the long association the family has with the house. There is the Francis Stonor's collection that was formed between 1945 and 1968, the collection includes wooden sculpture, old master pictures and drawings, bronzes and Venetian Globes to name a few.

Visitors can see medieval and 18th Century stained glass at the Hall staircase and Drawing Room. There is 18th and 19th Century American furniture, along with an interesting collection of contemporary ceramics from Asia and Europe.

The Chapel is among the best known buildings at Stonor. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is believed to have been built in the later part of the 13th century. It was built of flint and stone, on the site of a pagan stone circle with one stone being used as part of the Chapel building. The chapel has remained under the ownership of the Stonor family and is always been Catholic. Mass is celebrated at the Chapel for many years and is still celebrated today.

The Stonor Stone Circle relates to the site of a prehistoric circle of standing stones which can be viewed adjacent to the house. Here there are two types of stones, one type is sarsens made from blocks of sandstone with the other being the pudding stone made up of pebbles that are held together by limestone cement. One such stone has been visibly incorporated into the south-east corner of the chapel. Visitors can see examples of both the stone types at the stone circle.

Stonor has rich wildlife for visitors to see, there are Red Kites, among the most rare of UK birds, visitors are likely to see them flying around on a trip here. There are also Owls, woodpeckers and buzzards in the park, the historic park has not been cultivated making it peaceful and offering the wildlife the tranquillity to roam in peace.
