As winter approaches, you may think there is a long, cold winter ahead. That thought is enough to dampen the spirits of even the heartiest individuals. However it does not have to be like that, the phenomenon of the winter sun holiday looks like it is here to stay. An ever increasing number of people regard their winter break as an essential part of their holiday plans. There are plenty of holiday offers available from a number of UK tour operators to destinations in Europe and worldwide. Taking a holiday in winter can also mean that you can avoid the crowds associated with the summer season and benefit from off peak pricing.

So where can you go to avoid the winter blues? Here are some places worth considering:


Cyprus is blessed with one of the mildest climates in the Mediterranean, in Nov and Dec the temperatures are in the low 70s. The sunshine island does not disappoint with an average of 7 hours sunshine in the winter. The relatively short flying time from the UK to Cyprus makes it easily assessable, there are number of places to choose from including lively Larnaka well known for its vibrant nightlife and the more serene Paphos.

There are plenty of nice beaches where you can relax and take in the sun along with a choice of accommodation. The compact nature of the island makes visiting different places possible, making it a good option even for a short visit.

Goa | India

Goa has long been established as one of India's top tourist destinations. The miles of unspoilt beaches away from the crowds while enjoying temperatures well in to the 80s in Dec and Jan mean no hint of winter here. It offers good value for money and has a wide range of accommodation ranging from hostels to luxury hotels. There are a number of flights that fly directly to Goa from the UK and plenty of UK tour operators are offering a wide range of holidays to Goa.

Kenya is a popular destination for those in search of winter breaks. In Jan and Feb temperatures in Mombasa can go well in to 90s, it is a land of stunning natural landscapes and wildlife, making it one of the most intriguing places who are likely to visit. It offers good value for money and a stay in a top class hotel can cost less than you think. There are many miles of unspoilt coastline where you can find un-crowded beaches; there are also plenty of hotels to choose from with luxury hotels and resorts offering good value for money compared to prices in Europe.

Middle East

Dubai is a firmly established winter break destination, its desert location results in year round sunshine. Temperatures are well in the 80s in Feb and Mar with an average of 8 to 9 hours of sunshine daily. It is cosmopolitan and offers visitors deserts, mountains, great shopping malls and some of the most stunning architecture you are likely to see.

While Dubai is the established destination in the region, do not forget Oman that is fast gaining an enviable reputation for quality offering pretty much everything Dubai does at a lower cost. Both destinations have a number of resorts ranging from modestly priced to opulent luxury.


The Caribbean enjoys temperatures in the 80s in the winter months with plenty of sunshine ensuring it is a great location for a winter getaway. The Bahamas offers some great luxury hotels and Spas where you can relax and unwind in luxury. The Dominican Republic offers holiday makers great value for money that has helped it emerge as a preferred destination. Add established favourites Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago and you have a great choice of islands to explore, with miles of great beaches and inspiring scenery.
