Owlpen Manor is located on the historic Owlpen estate in the scenic Cotswolds region of the UK. The estate also offers a number of holiday cottages in addition to its main attractions the manor house and gardens. Visitors can take a tour of the famous Tudor manor house along with the formal gardens, the scenic setting makes for a most picturesque location some great views of the countryside. There is plenty of history and heritage here for visitors to enjoy here on a day out.

Attractions


Owlpen Manor is the family home of the Mander family and is regarded as among the finest and most romantic Tudor buildings in the UK. The scenic setting in the wooded valley in the famous Cotswolds provides a great backdrop to the house and gardens. The house dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and has over the course of its history been saved from ruin when it was neglected, the house has undergone restoration and renovation. It was back in 1926 that the manor house was subject to repair and restoration after it had fallen in to disrepair over the course of the previous century.

The house is the family home of the Mander family, who have a long history with the house, there are a number of valuable collections that the family have collected over the years.

Collections of fine art works, furniture and textiles among others are present in the house. Among the notable collections are the Tudor and Panelling wall paintings and a collection of Cotswold Arts and Crafts furniture, plasterwork and a range of other items.

Inside the historic house there are a number of interiors that contain a range of family portraits and painted textiles that are unique. Among the areas to look out for is the majestic Tudor Great Hall that dates back to the 17th century.

The Great Chamber is where visitors will find unique painted cloth wall-hangings with various different scenes depicted dating back to the early 18th century. The house and gardens have plenty of charm and tradition and sit ideally located in the Cotswolds landscape representing the finest elements of the English countryside.

The Gardens were developed around the early formal garden dating from the 16th century, hillside garden are based on a number of hanging terraces dating back a number a centuries and offers visitors the chance to see a historical garden that has survived to blossom. The Old English style garden was critically acclaimed and highly thought of by prominent gardeners in the 20th century.

The Walled Kitchen Garden is among the finest features in the gardens, visitors can also taker a relaxing stroll through the gardens including along the circular walk around the mill pond. The gardens have been subject to alteration and modernisation over the years, such as for the Old English garden that has been recreated, there are traditional plants and flowers on show along with formal garden features.

Owlpen Church, known as The Church of the Holy Cross is still used on a regular basis on alternate Sundays. The churchyard has a number of table toms and other monuments to families that emigrated from Owlpen in the 1830s to areas all over the world.

The Owlpen Estate offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a number of varied walks across a number of footpaths, there are also long distance trails visitors can take part in that incorporate other areas of the Cotswolds. There are a number of species trees, plants and flowers that can be seen in the estate with the famous bluebells visible in the spring.


How to Get There


Owlpen can be accessed by both car and public transport:

By Car:

The Manor is located approx 110 miles from central London. The approx journey time is 2 hour 20 minutes from London. From London take the A4, then the M4 until junction 18. Follow the A46 north towards Stroud up to the junction with the A4135, at the junction turn left towards Dursley. Then take the second turning on the right after the Hunters' Hall pub in Kingscote to the village of Uley on the B4066. Take a right into the village and then look out for the signs to Owlpen.

There are parking facilities located on site.

For those using Satellite Navigation systems the postcode is GL11 5BZ.

By Train:

From London Paddington station in central London there are trains available to Stroud station located approx 6 miles from the site. The approx journey time is 1 hour and 45 minutes. Visitors can get a taxi from Stroud.

The House is open from May until September:

Open between 14.00 until 17.00 (Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday)

For the Restaurant & Gardens:

Open between 12.00 until 17.00

NOTE: It is recommended visitors check before going to ensure the Castle & Gardens are open before going, the opening days vary according to the time of year.
