Attractions

Corsham Court is an impressive and imposing stately home and houses a number of fine art works and furniture that have been collected over the years by residents. In the 18th century Paul Methuen moved to the house and decided to update the house and its design and the North Front was redesigned in a Palladian design was adopted. The works were complete by 1749 and in 1760 Capability Brown was invited to Corsham based on his expertise and reputation to develop the gardens, Brown has also given licence in architectural matters.

Currently the Court is owned by the Methuens, there have been several generations that have lived here over the years. Inside the house there are some great art and furniture pieces for visitors to see. Paul Methuen furnished the gallery and the staterooms with some high quality and ornate furniture and art pieces, in the late 18th century. Well known pieces include the set of four pier-glasses and side tables were designed especially for him.

The Cabinet Room and Picture Gallery contain a number of art pieces and treasures on display for visitors to view. The historic Cabinet Room has seen little change to the rooms from the time of the Napoleonic wars.

The Court is used today by both Bath Spa University and The National Society for Education in Art and Design and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Each of the rooms on display has plenty of fine features and period detailing along with fine craftsmanship.

The Gardens at Corsham offer one of the highlights for visiting, the formal gardens are approx 17 acres in size and are located mainly to the front and the rear of the main house. There are long herbaceous borders and high walls with climbers, box hedging and a lily pond. The formal gardens are reminiscent of gardens of the 19th century owning to the influence of Lady Jane Dorothea Methuen who was interested in gardening and lived here in the early 19th century.

There is also a Victorian influence that came about in subsequent years with the introduction of themes and species that are marked out for the era in question. Visitors can see mature magnolias and other flora that helps to ensure there is plenty for visitors to see in the gardens on a year round basis. There is plenty of colour and contrasts in the gardens that offer visitors a great place to relax and enjoy a stroll at the well kept gardens.

Corsham Park has witnessed a restoration and management plan that included dredging the lake and other measures to ensure the future of the park. There were also many hundreds of trees that were planted back in 1999 as part of the grand plan for the future of the park. The park is a relaxing place where visitors can see the lake and a range of plants and trees making it a great place to enjoy a walk. There is also wildlife to spot here too.
